New Year, New Seeds

Every day brings a need seed catalog to the mailbox.  While I’ve been reading them as they arrive, I’ve waited until the majority are here before I make my final decisions.  Last summer I kept a list of many of the varieties I want to grow in 2011 and now it’s time to edit that list.  I’ve committed to raising only heirloom fruits and vegetables, planting seeds that are rich in history and have been passed down for generations, many of them from right here in Pennsylvania.  Heirloom vegetables are from an era before vegetables were bred for transportability, longer shelf life and ultra-high yields.  Heirloom vegetables are meant to be grown locally and often eaten within hours of being harvested. Once I place my orders I will post what I plan to grow this season.

Below the photo are links to some of my favorite catalogs and web sites.

Beautiful shot and wonderful news re: your heirloom only approach!! The difference in fruit and veg that were meant to be harvested and used – as opposed to harvested too early, treated and sprayed, and traveled for weeks – well, it’s just amazing and once you go there, you can’t go back!!!
